(continued) All in all, I think the people at Parklane Gallery are really trying to make a miniature show work here. Nancy Thompson, show chair, was very helpful in allowing me to take the photos to post this year to help promote the show, by encouraging more artists to submit their work and have a great place for collectors to view fine art miniatures. There were over 380 entries from the US and three foreign countries, with 43 sales so far. I was told the collectors were happy with the quality of the work. Lets hope they continue to see this show as one that they look forward to with collecting in mind. That would be good for the gallery and the artists. There aren't that many miniature art shows on the west coast, so I am glad they are in their 16th year. This is my second year with Parklane and I will continue to submit my work here.

Parklane Gallery's 16th Annual Juried International Miniature Show
By: ,
May 19 2008, 2:47 PM EDT
I went to the Private Reception and Awards Ceremony at the Parklane Gallery in Kirkland WA last evening to view their 16th Annual International Juried Miniature Show. It was a private reception and awards ceremony, so the attendees were mostly artists and their guests. (The patron reception was held earlier in the month.) The work had been juried by Cissy Gray, who was recommended by the original juror Sharon Tietjen, who was unable to do so due to the development of a serious health condition. The work in the show this year was of a higher quality than the previous year, in my opinion, due to the changes of the gallery's prospectus of 2008. Gone were the small canvas paintings and the square canvases with wide painted sides. I still think there is some room for improvement in the arrangement of the work. It was hung in what looked like a random order, not arranged by artist, nor by subject, or even medium. I found it difficult to find the work of someone I was looking for. Perhaps it was hung that way due to a space issue. As with many of the miniature shows, it is difficult to see works that are hung high, or the ones hung very low. I don't know what the solution for that would be here. The lighting, however, was very good, and the large picture windows in front allowed natural light and a great view of the busy downtown area. There is a lot of foot traffic and passersby could see the miniatures on display from the outside. The gallery itself is located on a small tree-lined street with shops, cafes, and eateries all around.

Just returned from the reception which was well attended by an enthusiastic flow of art lovers (mostly regular patrons of this show). I saw six or more paintings sell during the first two hours. Pieces are grouped by medium--the show is attractively hung and well lighted. Miniatures are hooked onto cloth-covered free standing panels lining the center of the gallery. Artists sent in work from many US states and several countries. Gallery owner and staff take obvious pride in hosting this long-standing miniature show.

I was very excited to be accepted as an Exhibiting Member of the Australian Society of Miniature Art (NSW) in April of the year (2007). Prior to being accepted, I had purchased the limited edition book "Miniature Art in Australia - Past and Present" which gave me an idea of the high standard required. To me, it is fascinating to see what other artists can achieve in such small areas and I read that book from cover to cover so many times. My first exhibition was the National Awards Exhibition in July, 2007 and I don't think anyone was more surprised than I was, when one of my watercolours won Best Watercolour and Best In Show. For me, I'm sure, it was beginners luck as there were so many beautiful pieces of artwork on show. I would love to see a greater public awareness of just how much work goes into a miniature painting and how amazing this art form really is. And to any artists out there who share a passion for miniature art but lack a little confidence in their own ability, I say believe in yourself and give it a go because you just never know where it might lead!

Dear Lee, I wish you all the best in your goal for becoming a member of ASMA NSW. As I get emails forwarded from the ASMA NSW website, I noticed that you had asked Lex for this book and I hope you do get a lot out of it. Another book that I found really interesting, which I think is no longer in print, but is still available from Amazons is "The Techniques of Painting Miniatures" by Sue Burton. This book covers some of the more traditional techniques and the work in there is really beautiful. I love both the traditional and some of the more contemporary miniature art. I look forward to seeing some of your work and would be interested to know what mediums you like to work with. We live on the outskirts of Sydney and so I haven't managed to get to very many exhibitons either, but find the net a fabulous resource to learn from, to gain inspiration and to admire what other artists are doing. Warm wishes, and happy painting Karen

I've just received a letter from Parklane Gallery regarding changes for their 2008 show. They "wish to adhere more closely to the classic definition of 'miniature art'." The size will be no more than 25 square inches with tightly rendered fine detail. The framing will be in proportion to the image and not exceed 24 inches when the outside dimensions are added. That will not be anything new for most of the artists who enter the society shows. They have increased the number of enteries from four to seven. Included with the letter is a comparison sheet showing the differences between miniature art and small works of art. Their prospectus will be online in Jan. 2008.
This gallery is in a very nice location in downtown Kirkland WA with lots of foot traffic. The show can be seen from the street through the large windows in front. I wanted to take photos, but they said no due to copyright issues. I did see a few people taking photos of others with their awards, however.

2007 was my first year participating in the Fells Point miniature exhibition. I was very pleased with how well the show kept the artists up to date with the happenings of the show (via email) - general sales and numbers, awards, events, etc. The website provided nice exposure as well.
I was fortunate enough to have sold work and been awarded in the show this year. Both the check for the artwork and the prize for the award were sent before the close of the show. After the close, the remaining work was returned promptly.
I also had the chance to meet one of the directors of the the exhibit at a recent art event. He was very nice and is very dedicated to the exhibition.
I would certainly recommend participating in this exhibition.

I have been entering the MPSGS for a number of years now, it is a beautiful show that is handled very professionally. I've been fortunate enough to be able to attend it in person a number of times. Everything is presented very elegantly and in the pristine setting of the Strathmore. Having visited and seen a number of miniature society shows, I can say that I have not seen a nicer or more elegant show.
The attendance of the exhibit was wonderful - during the show opening events when I was there and sales were brisk. There were visitors from many foreign countries, both artists and art lovers. Exposure in the Washington Post is a real benefit to the artists participating in the exhibition. Collectors commented on this year's high quality. The show has drawn numerous new artists this year as well.
In conversations with the officers of the society, I can also comment that you will not find a more dedicated group. They work very hard to provide this beautiful venue for collectors and miniature artists.
The show's website has also provided great exposure to the artists who placed this year - it was promptly updated showing images of all of the awarded works as a preview of the show.

Hi Barbara,
The president of the society mentioned that to me in conversation. He didn't specify that it was about a notice or article - just that it brought many, many people into the show, so I really can't say. ...but he is very nice, I'm sure he would be happy to chat about his exhibition if you asked him (the secretary would be happy to help as well for that matter).
Best,
Rebecca

I entered 3 works into this show in 2007. The gallery did a GREAT job of keeping everyone updated as to the status of the show, and the works in the show. Everything was handled well, and my unsold drawing promptly returned to me. I sold 2 out of three...

Joan is so knowledgeable about miniatures and the history of miniature painting. We are really thrilled to have her support for the website. She has helped me a great deal in my own research as well.

I entered the 2007 show, with 4 graphite works. Things were a little confusing with framing requirements, overseas shipping, and some of the 'unique' requirements on the prospectus (such as labeling, etc), but various society members were very helpful in sorting things out as needed. The society handled everything very professionally, and it also helped that they are able to accept credit cards for membership and entry fees- so there is no worry about exchange rates, etc.
They were great people to deal with! I only wish I could have visited the show this year.

Hi Cindy! I set this up from the existing template on this site and Juli has been kind enough to keep it up. You can thank her for offering her time! We could not keep this calendar current with all the other things we have to do with the website and our own artwork, so she has made it possible.

This show was where I got my start in doing miniatures. I saw the "call to artists" and noticed the gallery was in Chambersburg, a small town near the area where I grew up. After researching what a miniature was, I sent off two works I had done especially for this show. Not only were they accepted, I was awarded an Honerable Mention on one. I was thrilled!
Anne Finucane, exhibit coordinator, was very helpful in answering my questions. I received notice of acceptance of my work before the show, and after, safe return of my work and a catalogue of the show. This show was a great first experience for me and because of it, I am now hooked on doing miniatures.

As is mentioned in the information above, this is the largest miniature art show in the world- And is not to be missed by ANYONE interested in Minaiture art! While opening weekend is probably the best time to visit for an artist, get there whenever and however you can, seeing the show is quite an experience.
Visiting this show was how I became interested in Miniatures in the first place, and it continues to amaze me each year. I entered it for the first time last year, and am looking forward to entering again this year.
