This was the first show I submitted work to. The instructions were clear. Everything worked exactly as I expected. My parcel was delayed in arriving, so my paintings missed the submission deadline, but they accepted and hung them anyway. Communication through e-mail and phone was excellent. They were patient with this newbie, handled by work with care, and returned it to me exactly as promised. And they didn't laugh at my early attempts. I'll be participating again, submitting work and (fingers crossed) going north for a weekend to see the exhibit personally.

I was privileged to attend this show in 2009. It is nothing short of breathtaking. The volunteers at the show were so friendly and welcoming, I felt right at home immediately. The other visitors to the show were inquisitive and eager to share; this made for a fun atmosphere. The exhibit itself was amazing. Allow as much time as you possibly can, because every entry is worth a second, third, fourth look. And there are a lot of entries. Their permanent collection is magnificent; I doubt there could be a display to rival it anywhere. If you get the chance, go to this show! If you know anyone within a days' drive who is able to go to this show, encourage them to do so. They'll be glad they did. I wished so badly that I'd entered something in the show, or volunteered to demonstrate and answer questions. Everything was much more accessible than I'd imagined.

(continued) All in all, I think the people at Parklane Gallery are really trying to make a miniature show work here. Nancy Thompson, show chair, was very helpful in allowing me to take the photos to post this year to help promote the show, by encouraging more artists to submit their work and have a great place for collectors to view fine art miniatures. There were over 380 entries from the US and three foreign countries, with 43 sales so far. I was told the collectors were happy with the quality of the work. Lets hope they continue to see this show as one that they look forward to with collecting in mind. That would be good for the gallery and the artists. There aren't that many miniature art shows on the west coast, so I am glad they are in their 16th year. This is my second year with Parklane and I will continue to submit my work here.

Announcement! A number of us are hard at work in Mobile, AL to found the Alabama Miniature Art Society. Yesterday we solidified our commitment to this enterprise, as well as the details of our inaugural event this November which, to our knowledge, will be the first ever juried miniature art show in Mobile, AL. We are anxious to disseminate the invitation! Any assistance is appreciated. Call for Artists, Prospectus and Entry Form can all be found at www.drjava.com/miniature. The show is scheduled for November 15th - December 2nd. Deadline for entries submitted by post is November 7th. We realize that this is somewhat short notice, but we are going ahead with this show based upon the overwhelming interest we have already received from individuals throughout the Gulf Coast and beyond. Most Respectfully, Kira Kira Zielinski kira@drjava.com www.drjava.com www.drjava.com/miniature

Just returned from the reception which was well attended by an enthusiastic flow of art lovers (mostly regular patrons of this show). I saw six or more paintings sell during the first two hours. Pieces are grouped by medium--the show is attractively hung and well lighted. Miniatures are hooked onto cloth-covered free standing panels lining the center of the gallery. Artists sent in work from many US states and several countries. Gallery owner and staff take obvious pride in hosting this long-standing miniature show.

I was very excited to be accepted as an Exhibiting Member of the Australian Society of Miniature Art (NSW) in April of the year (2007). Prior to being accepted, I had purchased the limited edition book "Miniature Art in Australia - Past and Present" which gave me an idea of the high standard required. To me, it is fascinating to see what other artists can achieve in such small areas and I read that book from cover to cover so many times. My first exhibition was the National Awards Exhibition in July, 2007 and I don't think anyone was more surprised than I was, when one of my watercolours won Best Watercolour and Best In Show. For me, I'm sure, it was beginners luck as there were so many beautiful pieces of artwork on show. I would love to see a greater public awareness of just how much work goes into a miniature painting and how amazing this art form really is. And to any artists out there who share a passion for miniature art but lack a little confidence in their own ability, I say believe in yourself and give it a go because you just never know where it might lead!

Dear Lee, I wish you all the best in your goal for becoming a member of ASMA NSW. As I get emails forwarded from the ASMA NSW website, I noticed that you had asked Lex for this book and I hope you do get a lot out of it. Another book that I found really interesting, which I think is no longer in print, but is still available from Amazons is "The Techniques of Painting Miniatures" by Sue Burton. This book covers some of the more traditional techniques and the work in there is really beautiful. I love both the traditional and some of the more contemporary miniature art. I look forward to seeing some of your work and would be interested to know what mediums you like to work with. We live on the outskirts of Sydney and so I haven't managed to get to very many exhibitons either, but find the net a fabulous resource to learn from, to gain inspiration and to admire what other artists are doing. Warm wishes, and happy painting Karen

Changes for Parklane Gallery's 2008 Miniature Show

I've just received a letter from Parklane Gallery regarding changes for their 2008 show. They "wish to adhere more closely to the classic definition of 'miniature art'." The size will be no more than 25 square inches with tightly rendered fine detail. The framing will be in proportion to the image and not exceed 24 inches when the outside dimensions are added. That will not be anything new for most of the artists who enter the society shows. They have increased the number of enteries from four to seven. Included with the letter is a comparison sheet showing the differences between miniature art and small works of art. Their prospectus will be online in Jan. 2008.
This gallery is in a very nice location in downtown Kirkland WA with lots of foot traffic. The show can be seen from the street through the large windows in front. I wanted to take photos, but they said no due to copyright issues. I did see a few people taking photos of others with their awards, however.
