The original meaning of the term miniature refers to technique and not size - it means to paint very detailed. Often it's called painting "in miniature" and it has been stated that a piece of art that is as large as a wall could be painted in miniature. My daughters and I paint in that style exclusively and have done extensive research as well as talking to quite a few experts about it.
